Advancing the rights and economic independence of women and girls, combating gender-based violence, and creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
GENDER EQUALITY & WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT
Gender inequality is not a single problem it is a web of interconnected barriers that limit what women and girls can do, earn, own, and become. Better Nation Foundation works to dismantle those barriers through advocacy, economic empowerment, and community-level action that creates real and lasting change in the lives of women and girls across Tanzania.
From combating gender-based violence to building economic independence, our work recognises that empowering women strengthens entire communities.
PAST WORK
Gender-Based Violence Advocacy Campaign
Partner: Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF)
Region: Rukwa & Mtwara Regions
In partnership with WiLDAF, BNF conducted community advocacy campaigns targeting gender-based violence across Rukwa and Mtwara regions. The campaign worked to:
• Raise community awareness of the various forms of gender-based violence
• Highlight the negative consequences of GBV on individuals, families, and communities
• Mobilise community members including men to actively work to end GBV
• Promote appropriate community-level and legal responses to GBV
Mt Meru Women's Chicken Project
Region: Arumeru District, Arusha Region
BNF initiated a poultry project to empower women economically through rearing and selling traditional chickens. The project specifically targets poor single mothers, widows, divorcees, and women living with HIV in Arumeru District. BNF constructed a poultry house as the foundation of the project providing a stable, sustainable income opportunity for women who face multiple layers of economic and social marginalisation.
Women's Financial Inclusion: Cashew Nut Farmers
Partner: Covenant Bank for Women
Region: Mtwara Region
In partnership with Covenant Bank for Women, BNF mobilised cashew nut farmers with a specific focus on women to develop consistent savings habits, access formal banking services, and seek financial advisory support. The campaign helped women farmers build financial resilience and reduce their vulnerability beyond the seasonal harvest cycle.
