Tanzania's cultural heritage is extraordinary in its breadth and depth a living mosaic of over 120 ethnic communities, each carrying distinct traditions, languages, histories, and knowledge systems. Better Nation Foundation is committed to preserving, celebrating, and amplifying that heritage as a living force for identity, community pride, and cross-cultural understanding.
We use exhibitions, performances, storytelling, and research to promote cultural dialogue, recover lost or displaced heritage, and ensure that communities are the authors of their own cultural narratives.

Marejesho Information Centre is a Tanzanian-German initiative focused on the recovery and repatriation of ancestral remains and cultural property taken during German colonial rule.
Marejesho means “returns” in Swahili, reflecting its mission to bring home what was taken.
DNA analysis successfully identified the remains of Chagga and Meru leaders held in German museums for over a century.
A major milestone was the opening of the Marejesho Centre at KDC Moshi, creating a space for heritage, research, and remembrance.
Descendant families are pursuing repatriation, a government apology, and negotiations on reparations.
The initiative advances cultural restoration, historical justice, and communities’ right to reclaim their ancestors and stories.

Tulia Traditional Dances Festival
Partner: Tulia Trust / Office of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament
Region: Mbeya Region
BNF planned and organised the Tulia Traditional Dances Festival, celebrating Nyakyusa and other cultural traditions from Mbeya.
The festival created a platform for cultural preservation, learning, talent discovery, and intergenerational knowledge sharing.
Young people gained opportunities to learn traditional dances and skills from experienced cultural performers.
They were able to showcase their talents, participate in competitions, and win prizes for outstanding performances.
The exposure and recognition helped build their confidence, skills, and motivation to develop their talents further.
The festival also strengthened community participation and pride in local cultural heritage.
Its success led to its establishment as an annual event, creating a sustained platform for cultural expression and youth development.
